Leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and reduce risks

Written by Mark Young

In today’s competitive landscape, fleet operators of all sizes have a unique opportunity to improve their operation using technology.

A recent survey conducted by Motor Assist revealed some revealing insights regarding the current state of technology adoption in the fleet sector.

While 90% of respondents acknowledge that technology can lead to reduced vehicle off-road time and risk, the actual uptake remains modest.

Current Technology Utilisation in Fleets

The study, which surveyed 200 decision-makers in commercial vehicle and company car fleets, found that the most commonly utilised technology is simple GPS tracking, with only 57% of fleets using these systems. Other technologies, such as fleet management software (43%) and telematics to monitor driver behaviour (35%), are adopted even less frequently. This presents a significant opportunity for fleets to upgrade their technological capabilities and streamline their processes.

Efficiency Gains Through Technological Implementation

The survey revealed that over three-quarters (76%) of respondents believe that technology saves between 1 and 4 days of off-road time per incident. This reduction not only results in considerable cost savings but also enhances overall fleet efficiency. Furthermore, 59% of participants indicated that technology helps decrease the frequency of incidents. However, with only 74% of fleets implementing a driver safety program, it’s apparent that many organisations still have room for improvement. By bolstering their commitment to incorporating technology across their fleet management strategies, companies can better equip themselves to mitigate risks and enhance operational efficiency.

Insightful Findings and Next Steps

Scott Hamilton-Cooper, Chief Commercial Officer at Motor Assist, reflects on the findings:

“Despite the challenging environment for optimising fleet operations, there exists a tremendous opportunity for fleets to achieve significant efficiency gains. While GPS tracking technology is not comprehensively utilised, it offers clear advantages for both large and small fleets when leveraged correctly.”

Nearly all respondents (95%) agree that enhanced data on fleet risks and incidents would enable them to take effective actions to bolster their operations. Comprehensive, actionable data can pave the way for better decision-making. Scott Hamilton-Cooper Chief Commercial Officer, Motor Assist

Hamilton-Cooper underscores the potential for improvement: “Nearly all respondents (95%) agree that enhanced data on fleet risks and incidents would enable them to take effective actions to bolster their operations. Comprehensive, actionable data can pave the way for better decision-making.”
