Nearly four in 10 drivers face unplanned repairs in the UK

Written by Motor Assist

In the last year, 39% of UK motorists have had their cars taken off the road for at least a day due to unplanned repairs.

The recent Report on Motoring found that 68% of those who’d said their car had required unexpected repairs were without their cars for two days or more, with over one in 10 (13%) claiming that it took over a week to get their car back.

Significant contributors to unplanned repairs included the rising number of potholes, coupled with an increase in the amount of drivers avoiding regular servicing and MOTs.

Over three quarters (76%) of motorists said that their maintenance and repair costs have increased in the last 12 months, a rise of 40% since 2021, with costs being the main concern of vehicle ownership amongst 25% of UK drivers according to the report.

Regular maintenance and servicing is the best way to prevent unexpected bills and for preventing downtime whether you are a private motorist or drive a fleet or company vehicle, as avoiding it can result in unplanned repairs down the road, which are often far more costly.

In the event of an incident, Motor Assist keeps businesses and fleets mobile by providing necessary remedial work through its network of approved repairers, as well as offering like-for-like replacement vehicles when required, including EVs.
