More than half of dealers believe 2026 ZEV mandate will be met

Written by Motor Assist

Almost six out of 10 (57%) of used car dealers expect the 2026 ZEV mandate to be met, according to January’s Startline Used Car Tracker.

For 2026, the minimum number of a manufacturer’s zero emissions sales must hit 33%. However, of those polled, 70% of dealers also believe that more Government support will be needed for the targets to be met.

With EV uptake remaining slower than hoped following the Government’s decision to introduce tax for electric vehicle drivers last year, the survey also revealed that 44% of dealers believe that the Government will soon be forced to revise its targets, with a further 20% believing that goals set for the remainder of the decade aren’t achievable.

To continue to encourage the transition to electric vehicles ahead of the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, it’s vital for the UK car industry to continue incentivising the switch and to offer suitable infrastructure, including accident management services tailored for EVs.

Motor Assist can provide end-to-end management services in the event of an incident, for vehicles with ICE and EV powertrains. This includes a network of expert bodyshops that can cater to any vehicle, and like-for-like replacement vehicles if a car needs to be taken off the road, including EVs.

EValuate, the latest initiative from Motor Assist, can also provide ICE drivers in need of a replacement vehicle with the opportunity to select an EV for a real-world extended test, to see if EV ownership is viable in future.
