Fleet managers are seeing discounts as high as 45–55% on new electric cars and vans as manufacturers compete for market share. In some cases, ‘buy one, get one free’ deals are being offered, especially for larger orders.
This aggressive pricing is largely driven by the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, with new brands – particularly from China – pushing prices down to win fleet business.
In the webinar hosted by Fleet News, participants discussed how discounts on cars, and especially vans, have risen steadily over the past 18 months and that ‘two-for-one’ deals on vans aren’t unheard of. They also flagged that if supply tightens, OEMs will start withdrawing the offers.
Lorna McAtear, head of fleet at National Grid and vice chair of the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP), said fleet managers are eager to seize these deals while they last. However, she pointed out that the savings don’t always directly benefit drivers, as P11D values stay the same, meaning there’s no reduction in monthly benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax.
Paul Hollick, AFP chair, argued that lowering P11D values would do more to support the EV transition than fleet-level discounts alone. He said price cuts can help drive wider market demand, but both fleets and retail buyers need incentives to switch.
